Looking Ahead

LOOKING AHEAD

Regardless of whether birthmothers make a parenting plan or an adoption plan, APFU wants to help them develop the skills they need for long term success. Birthmothers continue their formal education while in the program and the structured environment at the house and the Learning Center allow the birthmothers to learn about budgeting, nutrition, cooking and menu planning, cleaning, parenting and adoption, anger management, and other valuable life skills. APFU also provides the opportunity for the birthmother’s support person, as well as the birthfather, to receive guidance and support.

Birthmothers also have the opportunity to earn both Character Points and Mommy Bucks during their stay at APFU. Character Points are earned through demonstrating character values such as respect, self-control, responsibility, honesty, caring and kindness, and patience. Character Points are earned every week and can be redeemed by birthmothers throughout their stay for toiletry items such as shampoo, shave gel, make-up, nail polish, deodorant, lotion and toothpaste.

Birthmothers earn Mommy Bucks through fulfilling their responsibilities, performing tasks that contribute to the ministry, and completing their program work. Typically, birthmothers earn at least $300 in Mommy Bucks each month during their stay. Upon completion of the program, birthmothers use their Mommy Bucks to purchase items needed for their babies, including diapers, wipes, clothes, cribs, car seats, bottles, blankets, diaper bags and more.

Additionally, each birthmother that completes the program has a graduation ceremony and a baby dedication. Click here to see videos.
