HISTORY

A Place For Us Ministries was organized in 2001. The heart of the ministry is “to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; …to comfort all who mourn… to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified” (Isaiah 61:1-3).

In 2002, a temporary home was opened in a donated facility on Lake Greenwood where over twenty birthmothers were served. The temporary site was sold in 2004. In 2005, APFU broke ground to begin construction on a permanent facility. The 3265 square foot home, which was completed debt-free in December 2006, can house up to six birthmothers at one time. The first birthmother moved into the new home in April 2007. To date, we have served a total of more than 50 birthmothers, along with their families and the birthfathers.

During the building phase of the permanent home, APFU opened “The Alcoves.” The store is a marketplace ministry, consisting of approximately 30 mini boutique shops. “The Alcoves” is also home to “The Shepherd Shoppe,” a Christian bookstore. Also located within “The Alcoves” are “The Secret Place” (an upscale resale boutique owned and operated by APFU) and (coming soon) the “Goodness and Mercy Tea Room.” A small percentage of the sales from “The Alcoves” helps support APFU.

In 2007, A Place For Us began hosting “The Most Excellent Way” at the Alcoves. “The Most Excellent Way” is a Christ based support group for those facing drug and alcohol addictions and other life-controlling issues. “The Most Excellent Way” meets Mondays at 6:30PM in the basement of the Alcoves.
